The most famous Botanical Gardens of Indonesia, perhaps of SE Asia

Thanks to ever-increasing urbanization of Jakarta, Bogor is by now almost a suburb of the capital, connected by commuter train. But for the tourist and the traveler, Bogor is still foremost the site of a fabulous botanical garden, started in the early 19th Century by Sir Stamford Raffles, and afterwards greatly expanded by generations of Dutch, and lately Indonesian, botanists.

I am not a specialist, but I hugely enjoyed an afternoon in the garden, admiring the various special collections – palm trees, aquatic plants, a Mexican garden. But most of all, I enjoyed the orchid collection, both outside in the orchidarium, and inside in a glass house. I didn’t know botanical gardens could be so much fun!

Some pictures to further illustrate the joy of a botanical garden.
