the entrance to the Crna Reka Monastery is by wooden bridge

The Crna Reka Monastery is unique amongst the Serbian Orthodox monasteries in that is consists largely of rock-hewn rooms connected by narrow stairs and passage ways. Nothing like the big complexes we have seen elsewhere, in Zico and in Studenica. Also, they are a lot less hung up about taking pictures inside, which gives me the opportunity to share some more photos of this special monastery. More of this in the original post, Serbian monasteries.

one of the balconies at the outside of the rock wall

not all is frescoed, some of the decoration is on wooden panels

narrow stairs lead upwards to rock-hewn chambers

but frescoes are too difficult on rough-cut rock

so this is the replacement type of decoration

and some of the walls have been painted, too

the ceiling of the chapel in very impressive

like this part, the back of one of the chambers
