Dragutin Cigarcic’s ‘Water carrier’ (1968) in the Gallery of Fine Arts in Novi Sad

This galley in Novi Sad houses the Gift Collection of Rajko Mamuzić, another collector who donated his collection to the state. Unlike the Pavel Beljanski Memorial Collection, which mostly represents first half 20th C works, this collection is more focussed on the second half of the 20th C, from 1960s onwards, when a post-war generation of artists rejected tradition of socialist realism, and began to experiment with other forms of expression. Which is all the more remarkable as this cannot be that straightforward in a communist country.

Now there is nothing all too revolutionary, but quite a few of the works are quite nice, indeed.

Some examples:

the outside of the gallery, with a banner promoting the exhibition Confessions of Yugoslavian Moderns

and a sculpture, by Angelina Gatalica: ‘Female figure – Seated Nude’ (1957)

Miomir Radovic: ‘Doubt’ (mixed technique, no date)

another Dragutin Cigarcic, called ‘Gracije’ (1972)

Bosko Petrovic: ‘Bunk Beds’ (1969/73)

Zoran Popovic: ‘Military Rank’ (1971, felt pen)

Lazar Vozarevic: ‘Maternity’ (1955)

Mladen Srbinovic: ‘Double Act’ (1954)

a little predictable, I agree, ‘Bridge on the Sava’ (1958), by Aleksandar Tomasevic

and a bit more abstract, by Edo Murtic: ‘Aggressive Space’ (1966)
