20. Edzna

Blog entries, Locations
Because we couldn’t find a decent breakfast, and because we spent far more time in the little Maya Museum at the Fuerte de San Miguel, we finally arrived at the Maya site Edzna at around 11.30 am. Right, the hottest part of the day, and it was already a hot day. But the spin-off is [...]

Museo Arqueologia Fuerte de San Miguel

Blog entries, Gallery
This delightful museum just outside Campeche has a fabulous collection of Maya artefacts from sites all over Campeche and Yucatan provinces. There is a lot of explanation, a lot of detail, on site, also in English, but I have mostly focused on the aesthetics of the artefacts displayed. And share a few more photos here.

19. Campeche

Blog entries, Locations
Colonial city-wise, things are getting better. Was Valladolid a bit of a disappointment, and Merida quite nice, but a little big and crowded, Campeche is a charming and well-preserved town, with a lot of atmosphere. Well, it is a big city in its own right, but the historical centre, within its original defensive wall – [...]

Labna

Blog entries, Locations
Labna is one of the smaller Ruta Puuc sites of Mayan origin. Most of the site’s buildings are from the Late Classic period, 600-900 AD, like the other UNESCO World Heritage sites here, Uxmal, Kabah and Sayil. The main structure, the Grand Palace, is with its over 120 meters width even larger than similar the [...]

Sayil

Blog entries, Locations
Sayil, the Maya site located along the Ruta Puuc, covers a much bigger area than the other three sites visited during our Yucatan trip of 2024, Uxmal, Kabah and Labna. Like the others, it is also Late Classic, 600-900 AD. It contains one spectacular building, the Grand Palace. It is more than 70 meters wide, [...]

Kabah

Blog entries, Locations
Kabah is the second largest Mayan site along the Ruta Puuc in western Yucatan, after Uxmal. Like Uxmal, the architecture here also dates from the Late Classical period, 600-900 AD. The most impressive structure is the Codz Pop, or Palace of the Masks, a 55 meter long building of which the façade has been decorated [...]

Uxmal

Blog entries, Locations
Uxmal is the most important Maya site along what has become known as the Ruta Puuc, in western Yucatan. Evidence of pottery shows that the site was already occupied by 800 BC, but most of the architecture for which the site is famous dates from what is called the Late Classical period, 600-900 AD. There [...]

18. the Ruta Puuc Maya sites

Blog entries
Like in the Rio Beck area earlier, the Ruta Puuc is another area with a high concentration of Maya sites. ‘Puuc’ means hill in the local language, and this is indeed the only area in Yucatan that is a little more undulated, although not a great deal, certainly not in comparison to other regions of [...]

15 Chichen Itza

Blog entries
For us tourist-avers travellers Chichen Itza is a nightmare. According to what we heard from other people, trying to beat the crowds is not an option: by eight in the morning there is already a substantial queue, and in any case, from the Yucatan Country Club we have a two-hour drive to get to the [...]

11. Progreso

Blog entries
Progreso is a humble, but well established beach town, also along the Gulf of Mexico coast. Mostly Mexican tourists, I believe, which immediately changes the atmosphere, away from the aggressive targeting of the Gringo dollars. I say humble, because so far there are just a few hotels and restaurants along a pedestrian boulevard, and some [...]
