This monastery, in Fruska Gore south of Novi Sad in Serbia, is one of the first Orthodox monasteries we encounter on this trip. What stands out immediately is the wealth of frescoes, painted on the walls and the ceiling, wherever there is some space. The images of the frescoes are original, which means 16th, but they have been overpainted with oil between 1745 and 1757. They are in excellent condition, looking bright, despite the monastery having been at the receiving end of destruction and looting at several times during its history of some 500 years.
