As the second location of Museum De Fundatie, Castle Nijenhuis provides a further glimpse of the permanent collection, as well as an exciting and varied sculpture garden

The second half of Museum De Fundatie is this medeaval castle between the small villages of Heino and Wijhe, half an hour’s drive outside Zwolle. The castle itself contains mostly paintings from the museum’s permanent collection. Quite a variation in styles and ages, I selected a few paintings from Belgian artist Gustave de Smet – personal favourites on the day.

Outside the castle the extensive gardens are home to a sculpture collection, from modern to contemporary. Some parts are more conservatively displayed, with sculptures along well-manicured lawns, and in other areas room has been created for several remarkable large-scale contemporary works.

A great opportunity to wander around inside and outside a real castle, and at the same time enjoy a broad and exciting art collection.
