Public transport can be a bit of a challenge in Sumba, especially for visiting the smaller, traditional villages (buses between main towns are easy). It may thus be an idea to rent a car for a day, if you plan to visit some of the villages near Waitabubak, to the south the Wanokaka area or to the west the Kodi area. A guide is helpful to find the villages, to communicate with the villagers – who don’t speak English, generally -, and to get some of the background information about Sumba. We came across Yuliana Leda Tara, tel. 085239181410 and email: yuli.sumba@gmail.com, who proved an excellent guide and companion, and also arranges a car. Yuliana lives in one of the traditional kampongs in Waitabubak. Check out her Facebook page, too.
