the entrance of the City Hall building in Subotica

In most case our appreciation for Art Nouveau architecture stops at the outside, because most buildings are private, or companies that not necessarily encourage you sneaking inside. Occasionally, we do manage to get inside some of those buildings, invariably somewhat illegally, I think, and in doing so we get a glimpse of what Art Nouveau looks like, inside – but always a little uncomfortable, because we already anticipate being thrown out as soon as we are being caught.

So when we learned that the City Hall in Subotica, a truly extravagant Art Nouveau/Secessionist building, organised a tour of the inside, every day at noon, we jumped on the opportunity. And were not disappointed.
