This ancient tiny Hindu temple is located on a small, peaceful island that can only be reached by bamboo raft.
Candi Cangkuang is a small Hindu temple on a small island, just north of Garut and Cipanas. The temple is of historical interest, because it is one of the very few left in West Java, and is dated back to the 8th Century, which makes it older than the more well-known – and much larger! – complexes of Borobudur and Prambanan. For the casual tourist, the temple is not particularly interesting.
However, getting to the temple is all the fun, on a bamboo raft with a boatman punting you across the lake. A most idyllic setting, and a perfect afternoon excursion. In 15-20 minutes you can walk around the island, which instantly frees you from the crowds, and takes you past the peaceful Muslim cemetery.
