The place to stay in Solo (Surakarta) is the Roemakhoe Hotel (www.roemahkoe.com – if the link works, which is does not always do), a very nice heritage hotel, beautiful building beautifully decorated. Rooms are comfortable, with Western-style bathrooms and hot water. Free wifi, and free coffee or tea served in the afternoon. Restaurant is good, if somewhat pricy for what you get. The hotel is a little away from the center, but metered taxis are easily obtained in Solo, or take the bus into the center of town.
