From 1997 to 2000 we lived in Beijing, China. In these three years we spent a considerable part of our holidays travelling this fascinating country. I took notes, and photographs, and put to gethr some travelogues of trips we made; alas, illustrated by scanned slides, with some compromise on quality, as digital photography was still some time off.

Scroll further down for our more recent Southern China experience, from 2017.

Here for a travelogue of monasteries and mountains: two weeks in 1999 through Tibet.

And here for our 1999 Guilin-to-Guizou adventure, in Southern China.

Here for another travelogue, from 2000, from Yunnan.

Some of our experiences of those years have been captured under individual locations, which you’ll find at the bottom of this page (click on the appropriate location below)

There is also a 1997 Dutch-language article: “Sichuan en de Three Gorges”.

Recently, in December 2017, we returned to Yunnan in Southern China at the start of a South East Asian trip. The Yunnan part covered some less well known areas, minority country again, and Xishuangbanna – and modern, digital photography!
